Osteopathy at the Osteopathic Health Centre

The osteopath’s aim is to understand the sequence of events which have led a patient to develop symptoms and then, by using a highly developed sense of touch, to restore normal function of the musculoskeletal system and return the body to a state of mechanical balance.

Osteopathy is based on the following principles

  • The importance of the holistic approach; taking into account the whole body, past and present health issues as well as occupation or hobbies. Treatment is tailored to the individual.
  • The body’s structure affects its function so taking care of the body framework(skeleton, joints and muscles) is essential to good health.
  • The body has innate healing abilities and osteopathy works to allow this wonderful facility to function normally by helping to release any structural blocks.

By taking a detailed case history to find out how a particular problem has developed and examining the patient with our hands, we can make a diagnosis.

Any problems with the framework of the body can result in aches, pains and stiffness which in turn can alter the blood supply, lymph drainage or nerve supply to other parts of the body such as our internal organs.

Appropriate treatment such as gentle stretching, massage, joint manipulation and rebalancing techniques are used to create the right conditions for the body to heal and restore itself to normal.

Patients may seek advice for one specific problem only to find that other problems resolve too and they feel better in themselves.
